The 32 nd Annual HOSA National Leadership Conference was held in Nashville, Tennessee June 24-27, 2009. Over 6,300 HOSA delegates, guests and judges convened in Nashville, Tennessee to celebrate the conference. There were 4,500 competitors.

Recognition and Awards

Membership:

North Carolina HOSA received a plaque for increased membership this year, 8181 members.

Smithfield-Selma received a plaque for being the largest secondary chapter in the nation with 350 members.

Autism Speaks was the National Service Project this year:

The top state financial contributor, raising $9,586.32 was North Carolina HOSA. 

The largest single chapter contribution to Autism Speaks with $3,817 was David W. Butler High School in North Carolina.

The following chapters received Certificates of Recognition for their contributions to the National Service Project:

The Barbara James Service Award is presented each year to members for their outstanding service to their local communities. In addition, HOSA members with extensive community service hours received both the President’s Volunteer Service Award and the Barbara James Service Award. Each year, the Voting Delegates select the theme for the next year.  The 2009-2010 theme is “From Simple Scrapes to Failing Hearts, HOSA’s Where the Healing Starts!” submitted by South Carolina HOSA.

The voting delegates from all the represented states elected eight outstanding individuals that will lead National HOSA for the 2009-2010 year.  The newly elected National Executive Officers are:

Scholarship Recognition

HOSA state associations and National HOSA awarded over 129 scholarships in the amount $408,000 in scholarships this year!  At this year’s NLC, several deserving students were presented scholarships totaling $54,750.

HOSA was extremely honored to have the Acting Deputy Surgeon General Rear Admiral Robert C. Williams, P.E., DEE in attendance at this year's Opening General Session. Rear Admiral Williams has more than 28 years of experience in environmental engineering and public health and has served in the U.S. Army Medical Reserve Corps.  Rear Admiral Williams is a familiar face to HOSA as he addressed the students and advisors during the Washington Leadership Academy at the White House Briefing.  He is a strong voice for HOSA and takes our message to the halls of Washington as an advocate for the future of health care leaders.  HOSA is indebted to him for his support and friendship.

Also in attendance tonight was Scott Hess, Education Program Specialist with the U.S. Department of Education.  Scott Hess is the Director of the Discretionary Programs and Innovation Group in the Division of High School, Post Secondary and Career Education.  HOSA welcomed Mr. Hess to his second HOSA NLC experience and thanked him for his belief that HOSA does make a difference.
